Germany 'no longer always win' - Lineker modifies his popular quote

Gary Lineker needed to change his well known expression about the Germans continually winning for a second time after Joachim Loew's holders smashed out of the World Cup on Wednesday.

The previous England striker once broadly stated: "Football is a straightforward game - 22 men pursue a ball for a hour and a half and toward the end, the Germans always win."

On Saturday Lineker conveyed an updated rendition following Toni Kroos' sensational late goal against Sweden, which kept Germany's World Cup trusts alive

"Football is a basic game, 22 men pursue the ball for 82 minutes and the Germans get a player sent off so 21 men pursue the ball for 13 minutes and toward the end the Germans some way or another... win."

Lineker was moved to make a second change to his expression after South Korean's staggering 2-0 win in Kazan left the four-time title holders embarrassed and heading home as Group F's base group.

He composed on Twitter: "Football is a basic game. Twenty-two men pursue a ball for a hour and a half and toward the end, the Germans no longer always win. Past rendition is kept to history."
